Event: “30 Years Fall of the Berlin Wall: Divided memories, different realities, shared future”

The Arabic Cultural House, the Divan hosted 120 guests with numerous international Excellencies and Dignitaries as well as the guest of honour, former Federal Foreign Minister and Minister of Economy Sigmar Gabriel.

Yesterday, the Chairman of the Arabic Cultural House, the Divan HE Ambassador Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani opened the exhibition “30 Years Fall of the Berlin Wall: Divided memories, different realities, shared future” at the Arabic Cultural House, the Divan.
His Excellency stressed the importance of cultural diplomacy and noted the platform provided by the Arabic Cultural House to build bridges between nations and people through art and cultural exchange. He said that the “aim of the exhibition is to remember the highest of all freedoms – that of movement and travel, to choose freely the place where to live and to work.” In addition, the Dean of the Arab Ambassadors to Germany HE Dr. Mustapha Adib held a speech mentioning the importance of places like the Arabic Cultural House to bring people from all different backgrounds closer together.
HE Sigmar Gabriel, who opened the Arabic Cultural House, The Divan in his function as Federal Foreign Minister on November 21st, 2017, was the guest of honour for the event. As it was one of the last big functions under the leadership of Ambassador Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Mr Gabriel thanked HE for his continuous work for the relations between Germany and Qatar as well as the Arab world and praised him as one of the most active Arab Ambassadors in Germany. Mr. Roland Bischof, who is lending the segments on loan, explained why the exhibited original pieces of the Berlin Wall are so special: “they were the first pieces to be taken from East Germany and are the numbers 002-006 of the series for the international art trade, limited to 360 pieces worldwide.”
The exhibition comprises not only the original pieces of the Berlin wall but shows the history of the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989. It is the first of its kind in Germany and is open to the public until September 30th, 2019 at the Arabic Cultural House, the Divan daily from 9am to 4 pm.
